Driving & Local Tips

In Tonga traffic moves on the left side of the road with all drivers and passengers advised to wear seatbelts. All roads are not in good condition, but most roads in the capital Nuku’alofa are coral based and tarsealed.

Driving during nighttime can be hazardous due to low visibility , road quality and high volume of pedestrians and animals, so caution is advised.

Once you hit the road, observe the speed rules - everything is a slower pace than most visitors are used to - speed limits is 40kph in town and 65kph on the open road. Police do have radar guns and are more than happy to hand out on-the-spot fines.

Avis also advises to respect local customs, which limits activity on Sunday including business transactions and sporting activities. Other strenuous activities, such as general exercise, running, swimming and snorkelling are regarded as illegal on Sundays, unless on island resorts.
